“The community of Croydon Minster is very sad to learn the news of the death, late on 25th July, of Martin How, our brother-in-Christ, faithful fellow worshipper and Organist Laureate.
Martin died having been strengthened by the Rites of the Church and surrounded by love and prayer. May the holy angels sing him to heaven and may he rest in peace. Amen.
Details of Martin’s funeral arrangements will be shared as soon as possible.”
– The Revd Canon Dr Andrew Bishop
I sang under Martin How as a southern cathedral singer back in the early 80s at Addington. I also sang for him in your church about 20 years ago. Fond memories. I would dearly like to attend his memorial service please when it’s arranged. Perhaps I could please be on your mailing list? I’m not now local but will travel. Many thanks.
I was very sorry to hear of the death of Martin How.
I attended many of his courses in the 70s (Norwich, Lincoln and Addington Palace) and he was undoubtedly part of my lifelong love of music.
I contacted him earlier this year as I had found a recording of some of his music. I mean to send to him but sadly I still havent worked out how to get music off a cassette onto MP3.

I attended several organist courses at the RSCM in the days when Martin How was on the staff
at Addington Palace in Croydon. He was a lovely man, so encouraging and he had a great sense of humour too. Martin also came to the parish of St Peter and St Paul, West Mersea, near Colchester in Essex, when I was organist there. It was part of his work to visit parish choirs to encourage choristers and give them his invaluable advice to improve their singing. Very happy memories of those days. Martin was a very inspiring gentleman, who had lived an amazing life. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
